Visitors should be aware of what to expect if they choose to rent a vehicle while on island. Driving is done on the left side. As Saint Lucia is a very rugged and mountainous island many of the roads are steep with numerous turns. Heavy traffic conditions in the capital city of Castries and in the Rodney Bay area are often encountered. Narrow streets are also the norm in most towns and villages.

Drivers must purchase a Local Temporary Diving Permit which is effective for 3 months. A foreign or international license is required to acquire the temporary permit, which can be obtained from Immigration offices at the airports, car rental agencies or local Police Stations.
